Cronyism and Instability
Stability is crucial to providing fine town services and recruiting desirable business to our town. Instability harms our tax base and life quality.
Under Democratic leadership, our Town Council has interfered with our town employees and manager, and tried to replace many department heads, including our police and fire chiefs. Many Smithfield residents will recall a letter sent to the Smithfield public in which many department heads, including our Police and Fire Chiefs, warned us that the newly elected Town Council were trying to remove our Town Manager because he refused to fire many people and replace them with cronies. This issue was well reported in the pages of the Providence Journal. Finally, seven department heads, including two Town Planners, and other employees, have fled the town. The result is that service to residents has been greatly harmed. We have had trouble replacing these dedicated employees because in the municipal service industry, news travles fast.
We have now seen first hand how devastating cronyism is to a town government. When public safety is involved, it's outright dangerous to our residents. We have never, and will never engage in cronyism, or interfere with our town employees. Our town is based upon a professional Town Manager, who manages staff. Our Council sets policy. This isolates hiring from politics, enabling Smithfield to recruit and hire the best staff available.
Once we are elected, we will repair the damage done so we can recruit fine replacements for those we have lost. We will rebuilt our damaged reputation and restore town services.
